Operations

Operational staff of the Swan Valley Forest Resources Division consists of one Area Supervisor and 4 Operations Technicians. The Operations staff are responsible for the day to day harvesting operations of approximately 20 contractors, 34 quota holders, and 100+ private land suppliers. The supervision of all contract suppliers includes road and block layout (flagging) and regularly checking the progress of operations to ensure that all prescriptions and provincial standards are being met.

  • Private land suppliers deliver wood from north of The Pas south of Riding Mountain, from east of The Narrows to Yorkton.
  • There are over 250 logging trucks registered to haul wood the LP mill. An average day at the scale is about 140 trucks, but can go as high as 200.
  • Approximately 40 km of temporary logging access roads are built annually. Approximately 70 km of existing roads and trails are used or upgraded each year. Road/trails that are made into harvest blocks are decommissioned after a block is complete, unless that road/trail was pre-existing.
  • All stream crossings are constructed to meet provincial standards (Department of Fisheries and Oceans). Approximately 20 crossings are installed each year. These range in width from 0.5 m creeks to 20 m rivers.
  • 85% of LP’s Contractor operations are mechanical, although there are still some conventional loggers in operation.
